Funny Weather

If anyone has been watching the weather as of lately then you would know that not only the US is having some crazy and abnormal weather. Australia is currently taking on a Category 5 cyclone, the name is Yasi, doesn't sound to scary right? Well regardless how scary the weather becomes we know as surfers that weather plays a huge role in our lives. We each want hurricanes here in Florida, and it's probably the same over in Australia seeing that many pros and surfers alike have been scoring some insanely good waves. With only a few weeks till the 2011 ASP event, Aussies are ready and have been able to hone their skills just a little more with each wave.

We all hope that everyone being affected by all the crazy weather occurrences makes it out ok. Even though we all love blue skies and warm weather, personally I can't wait till hurricane season and maybe a couple last cold fronts before winter is over. Surfers thrive on storms. We know that the bigger the storm the bigger the waves and the more we will get. Most sane people wish for no storms and perfect weather, while we (surfers) are behind their back saying "come on just one good hurricane will make me happy". I know it sounds so bad, but in reality we don't want it to hit we just want it to come close enough to scare us and give us some waves.

Enjoy the weather,

ASP Event Scheduled for New York!

It's about time the ASP scheduled an event on the East Coast, and of all places they choose New York. I heard rumors about a possible ASP event on our coast, but would have thought it would be around the Outer Banks or somewhere that sees frequent barrels and more heavy surf. Then again New York is less recognized for their waves because of the cold and the city makes the beaches overlooked my many surfers.

On top of the ASP holding an event on the East Coast, this event will be the highest paid event ever in ASP history. So hopefully Long Beach, the event location, will offer up some quality East Coast surf for the WCT guys. This will be the East Coast time to shine and show the rest of the world we do get good waves, but as we all know the East Coast is very moody and at any point it can go onshore and terrible.

So, will you be making a little trip to this event? Seeing that its the first ASP event on the East Coast in 30 years this event will probably be stacked with standing room only on the beach. Well I guess all we can do is wait and see how this event plays out and maybe an East Coaster can take the event, other than Kelly Slater.

Getting Some Assistance

Getting pulled into a wave has been around for quiet some time. Mostly used when the waves get to big to paddle into and you still want to surf. But what if the waves are smaller and not very good? Using a ski can help you get the speed you need to try different things on your board that you don't usually get to try. Yesterday, a buddy and me did this, and it’s been a while since the last time we have done it. Lets just say I took a couple to get used to going that fast on a wave again, but after a couple I got the hang of it again and was right back at it. Waves were perfect for it, around the 2-3ft range with the occasional 4ft and light onshore wind. Using a ski can help anyone progress their surfing much more quickly than regular surfing. With in a matter of 10-15 minutes you can catch about 10-15 waves or more! Usually you spend about 30-45 minutes trying to do this especially on a small inconsistent day like yesterday. What makes this really fun is that where you do this is usually uncrowded and you can find a good spot that know one even knows about or has checked. Surfing has evolved with the use of jet skis to help you not only surf bigger waves but also try bigger maneuvers on small waves. I am sure that almost every pro has used jet skis before to make otherwise terrible surf into a fun filled air session. So, if you are looking to excel with your surfing or just have a good time in some small waves, then get a jet ski or find a friend with one. I promise you won't be disappointed with the end result.

Our end result: Lots of fun! A couple airs landed, and one huge floater across a scary but fun section. Learned a couple new things to try on my next surf, and that’s what its all about.
